iPad mount "project"

Been looking for a way to mount my iPad that won't permanently alter the car, is removable and convenient. Below are shots of "phase 1" which works well with a couple of problems (prompting some changes coming next week).

Keep in mind that the car is in park so the shifter would be back and completely out of the way when driving.

Current version has 2 issues and changes coming:

1. A bit closer to the middle of the center console that I'd like. Next week it will be up and to the side 1.5 inches more.
2. Not as "firm" at the swivel point. Changing the swivel mount from the normal ProClip version to the "large" version which will more than adequately keep the ipad rock solid once positioned.

Converts to a phone holder:

The "holder" is the hard cover from the Otterbox Defender iPad case. The mount is a swivel mount from Proclip (changing to the "large" version next week for stability):

The holder just slides into place onto the ProClip dashmount for the FX (I'm using their "move" clips to facilitate this):

I have the 3g version so I can either use 3g or WiFi depending on location. 3g is pretty consistent here in Austin.

Looks good.. Will the 1.5" longer mounting position be enough to give better access to the buttons on the center stack..? they looked pretty covered and unreachable at the moment.

I think it really will. A few reasons why:

1. It the mount is angled relative to the console, so, right and up also translates to "out" as well from the console.
2. The mount swivels (the new one will do so as well but will be much more stable) so it I can move it if necessary.

I've found that I don't often need to access the controls behind the iPad anyway since those controls are not commonly accessed (ie how often do you change the radio from the dial or change the temperature of the passenger side of the cabin).

So I think that with the tweak it will work out pretty well.

I also have the pillar mount on the driver side so I place my iphone there while the iPad is mounted in the center.

Lol, yeah. I'd love to do a truly custom install, but I am loath to 1) spend a fortune doing so a 2) spend a fortune because of the loss of value if I ever sell and upgrade the FX :)

But aside from that it sure does look super cool when the screen is on with say Navigon running GPS and the Infiniti screen running music or status display :)

I bet....too bad you aren't near Detroit....I'd love to check it out! What else is one your list to do?

Exhaust is probably next, and finishing the tuning work with Uprev. My only hesitation on the exhaust is the 1200 dollar question, will a full exhaust rework yield any real gains.

I'm almost tempted to simply go with a muffler change in order to improve the sound.

I also have a custom fiberglass sub enclosure coming, possibly next week or maybe near the end of the month.

And... I have a Cobra 1500 watt inverter that I'm having wired in so that I'll have 120 in the car at the back and front with a remote on switch in the center console (or glove box).

Well folks, got the new ProClip parts in. Changed the swivel mount to the "large/stronger" version (which is very stable in that regard). But....

Here's the problem I'm facing. The dash mount itself just isn't strong enough to support an iPad, especially one with the defender case like I have. After a bit it will slip out of the mount point (no damage, it's a clip in/sticky tape deal). The mount if perfect for a phone but not for an iPad.

So, this overall project is a fail.

I'm looking at going the route of a Ram Mount now with the seat bolt goose neck mount. Will have one in this weekend to test. I really love having the iPad in the FX and I'm hoping this will look ok and work well. If it looks tacky it's going to have to go :)

I think a flip up dash mount or flip down ceiling mount would look much better than it does in front of the console "police car" style. What do you use the iPad for in the car? Just Navigation?

Thats what I went with.:wink (2):

Nice. I like it! Another possible idea would be one of the 7" pads that run android. Your ipad looks like it might hit or get bumped by the passenger.

Well, I ended up scrapping the whole build :) It simply wasn't strong enough to hold the iPad, eventually the mount would come loose.

Instead I went with a seat mount with the goose neck. Worked out well. One of these days I'll post some pictures. :)

Can u post pix

I'm still contemplating on type of setup I want to go for

I'm in the wrong business. $121 for those two at Bestbuy, that is ridiculous! I would however like to get a real clean setup in my FX and will play around with it here soon. Custom may be the best way?

Yeah I agree with ya there. I would never pay that much for something I could potentially piece together for less. The only reason I even bothered to look was the gift card I have for Best Buy. Even with that though it still expensive. Oh well... the search continues let me know what you find.

I used and still have the proclip. I install it when i wanna sing but iPad are too big IMO so i use my Note alot more often now. Does the same job, at a better location so i dont have to look down, and 4G speeds.c6e4c99c-332d-cca1.jpg
