MPG Cause for concern?

It's a cold a snowy winter here on Long Island and with my FX50 6 weeks old and 450 miles travelled I see some computer and computer MPG in the single digits. I'm using premium fuel (93) and driving on the conservative side (for now) keeping the tach below 4K to get up to speed on the highway and generally between 1.5 and 2K in town...

I hear it will get better after the first oil change and tune, but...:eek.:
 
I'm going in for my first service in a couple of week... Dealer said wait till then to do anything. l'll watch and pray LOL!

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised though. It's an FX50 and that thing burns gas like hell. I know that it's rated for 14 city and 20 highway, but you'll probably never see that. My FX35 is rated for 16 city and 23 highway. And I probably average like 11-14 in normal driving. If you look at the fine print on the window sticker where it shows the MPG ratings for the car, there is fine print that says MPG's will vary depending on real world driving. Just cause it's rated for that, doesn't mean the car will always achieve that. But hey if you can afford to spend like $70K on an FX, spending some money on gas shouldn't be any concerns ;-).
 
I know... ;) I'm not to worried about it, just want to make sure all systems were (are) working as they should. On a happier note, I get a consistent 20+ on the highway. Of course when I exit and come to my first stop the mpg falls off sharply.

I had considered a BMW X6, but similarly equipped it was $20k more. Frankly, I'm happy I got the FX now I can st least feed the beast! LOL

20 MPG+ on the highway is pretty good though. I was actually expecting worse lol, but then again I have a heavy foot :-)

Maybe MPG's will improve after the first oil change. The reason why is because the car is just breaking in and all the metal shavings, silicone, and other things applied at the factory are wearing in and fouling the motor oil. Who knows :-)

Yeah, I'd be thrilled with 14 around town! I love the car, that 'pull" that kicks in at about 4k is amazing! Reminds me of my long gone 442!

im averaging about 11 but its not getting driven everyday. its sure sucks fuel though. i also drive it pretty aggressively. our 45 isnt much better. that averages about 13.
 
Do you start your car in the mornings and leave it to warm up? All that idling will kill your mpg too. I've seen mine drop this winter now that I am remote starting like crazy.
 
Don't just rely on the computer. If you reset your odometer each time you fill up, divide the miles traveled by the gallons of gas you put in next time you fill up.
 
Excessive idling in a car is very bad for it. Idling a car leads to fuel dilution in the motor oil, which can alter the oil viscosity. Excessive idling is the worse thing you could do to your car. That's why they say to change the motor oil more often in city driving because the car idles more. it also causes carbon build up in the motor. Oil analysis tests have proven this.

Oh and excessive idling causes increased valve train noise too due to altered oil viscosity.

Oh yeah, you're right. It depends on how you calculate the value. On my Audi, if you aren't moving then the computer doesn't calculate anything. It shows "---" until the car is in gear. I guess that's more of an instantaneous mpg than the FX's, which is a cumulative figure.

I do for a few minutes.... its either that and get in a warm car and go or sit and freeze for a while waiting.
I've only 450 miles on the FX50, but I plan on frequent oil changes. Small price to pay to protect my investment.

I've had my FX50 for 5 weeks (with almost 2K miles!), and I've been getting about 17 mpg per tank, and 16.6 mpg overall since I've had the car. When I first picked up the FX (at 6 miles), I notice the MPG was in the 11-12 range, but it slowly improved. I've been driving conservatively, but definitely let her out when I hit the freeway (110 mph feels like driving 60). I try my best to 'coast' when I can, and avoid braking. Although this is impossible in stop-n-go traffic. Overall, not too bad for a heavy car with a big 5.0 liter engine..
