Steering wheel shake fixed

There's a topic on another FX forum about this and since I performed it today I thought I'd pass along how to fix it. Several have done this also and the adjustment amount seems to vary between 1/4 and 3/4 of a turn. It seems a 1/4 of a turn at a time is the best way to do this. I believe to much will damage your rack. Plus it doesn't seem to take much so there's no need to go past the point you need.

My car is a 06 FX45 with new tires and a fresh alignment. I bought it used and it had the steering wheel shake at 60-65mph. I thought this was a balance issue until I seen the topic discussed in another forum. So here's what I did..

First off jack the driver side up and support it with jack stands. You will need to get under the car right behind the driver side front wheel. At this point you can probably see the bolt head (24mm bolt on steering rack) facing the rear of the car. You will have to remove two 10mm bolts (and one clip on mine) to allow the back of the steering rack cover to drop (you can hold it down while tightening). Then take a 24mm socket and rachet or breakover and tighten. The bolt you are tightening is on the rack itself and is to the left of two steering rack mounting bolts.

Here's what I found. When I initially tightened the bolt it was loose (probably to loose)and then became snug. I tried to keep in line with 1/4 and 1/2 turns so I went a full 1/2 at first. This went past the snug part by about an 1/8 a turn. I took it for a spin and noticed the following, tighter steering, the steering wheel did not return to center (had to manually do it), but the shake was completely gone. I didn't like the fact the steering wheel would not return so I went back and loosened the bolt an 1/8 turn which put it right where it would have been snug to begin with. I then took another drive. This time the steering was only slightly tighter (wife didn't notice), the steering wheel reacted normal, and the shake was gone. This seemed to be the sweet spot on mine. Its about 3/8 of a turn, but the most important part is it seemed to be right when the bolt got snug. I'd be interested to see if thats the same on some others. Either way this is very easy to do and works !!!

any pictures? i'm noticing the same prob. just got a wheel alignment, which was off since it's been dropped on H&Rs, and wheels balanced, but noticed a slight shake on the highway. want to try this out to see if it helps!
 
Nice write up, thanks, i actually have that problem too though it varies on the day? humidity? road surface?

i guess something wears inside that causing this and the fix is to tighten it a bit...I'll check the service manual and see if they mention something of the sort. I'll keep you posted.

Nice post. Yes, I had this done too. The FX is just so sensitive, it takes a lot, including this to fix it completely.

Do you think a regular adjustable wrench is okay to adjust the 24mm bolt??
 
the view is from the driver side wheel well and the bolt that needs to be turned is the one with surface rust on the top in the 3rd and 4th pics....

Thanks for the write up and photos!
The two dealers I spoke to about this had no clue how to fix this.
 
As a matter of a fact, I did this on Saturday when two different places tried to balance the crap out my tires. No more spending money on tire balancing!

I was really careful to not tighten this too much, actually for me it only took about a 1/2" turn clockwise to make the vibration go away and make my steering feel more responsive!
 
FYI:
Tighten it with torque
of 5.4 N·m (0.55 kg-m, 48 in-lb). After that loosen it within 20 degrees​
to
40 degrees
.



The rotating torque of adjusting screw is less than 5
N·m (0.51 kg-m, 44 in-lb).

Good info. I did this the other day, 1/2 turn = 4 clicks of the ratchet for me in the space given, there was no way I could turn it by hand.

Wheel didn't return to zero, so dialed it back 1 click and that was as good as it was going to get. Returns to 0 (just barely) but steering is much more tight and vibration is 99% gone.

I am happy.
 
Easiest Fix Iv'e Done

Finally got around to doing the steering rack adjustment and it took all of 10 minutes to do. This was by far the easiest repair to the FX I have ever done. It took about half a turn in untill lightly snug then I backed the adjuster screw out about an eighth of a turn. Just went for a test drive and no more shimmy at all.
