SES Blinking, Rough Idle

I changed my oil this morning, filled a tank of gas, and then drove around town running errands and grabbing some food. A few hours later, I come to a stop and then my engine starts shaking. I look down and my idle is really rough. The Service Engine Soon light comes on and starts blinking. The car struggles to accelerate. It sounded like it wasn't running on all 6 cylinders. It was pretty bad.

We were about 25 miles from home and I didn't really feel comfortable driving it all the way home as it was so I decided to drive a couple miles to my brother's house and leave it there. Since it is Sunday, I am just going to leave it there overnight and call Infiniti Roadside in the morning to have it towed to the dealer. I don't have a reader, and the closest Autozone was about 10 miles away, so I have no idea what codes its throwing. The car is just over 60k miles.

I searched IS and it sounds like this is my problem, or is similar anyways.

My wife's sister was driving behind me and she said that on the way to my brother's house, my car kept "blowing crap out of the exhaust". She said it wasn't exactly smoke... but what else could it be? That was the best description I could get out of her.

Sorry for the long(ish) post, I'm just a little bummed out. So... a penny for your thoughts?

dont really have any solutions but sorry to hear that kim and hope you get it worked out. Sucks that this is your second fx too =(. Keep us updated! and good luck!

sounds like a rare problem, but man i hope you have any kinda warranty. i am lucky i haven't encountered any problems like this coz i am without a warranty, this would kinda kill me..

Thanks Pat

It was a CPO so I have the CPO 6yr/100k warranty, but it should still be covered under the original powertrain warranty (assuming it is a powertrain problem)

Could be too much oil added during the change. How much drained out?

I poured in a 5 quart jug. I dumped the used oil back into the same jug and it looks like its about the 5 quarts as well.

Sounds like you need a new FX.....oh wait.

Haha, oil level too high is possible though. You can get the code in the car btw. You do some pedal stuff and count the number of blinks the SES light does. Someone did it for me once at the drag strip.

No, I did not check it. Do y'all think it could possibly be over filled? I normally don't check the level afterwards. I just check how much comes out, and I know only 5 qts go in.

Hmm... I'll check the level before calling roadside. If it is high, is there any way to drain out some of the oil? Or would it just be easiest and less messy to just drain and refill? Its not here, or else I would check right now.

If being too full is the problem, why didn't it show any signs right away instead of about 50 miles afterwards?

Flashing ses is misfire. Rough idle with ses is basically a cylinder not firing correctly. The stuff out the back is probably unburnt fuel from the misfire.

Check plugs and coilpacks. If you want to test it on your own to know which cylinder. Fire it up and unplug a coilpack at a time. If you unplug one and it doesn't get any worse than that's the bad cylinder. At that point it is either coilpack, spark plug, not unlikely but could be an injector.

Not that bad really. Most likely a bad coil pack, could have been bad gas and a mis hap with firing melted the tip of the spark plug. That's very unlikely though.

So it very well could be like the same problem Solekeeper had in my original post. I wont bother with checking the oil.. Well.. I'll check it anyways just to know.

That sounds like it should be covered under warranty so i'll let the dealer take care of it.

Solekeeper, now there's a name haven't heard in a while.

Actually I feel a bit dumb for not thinking of a misfiring cylinder. My friend once said his BMW was idling really rough, and I told him he probably had one cylinder not firing. Sure enough, that was it. Happened to the Volvo I drove before it became mine.

Yeah, I didn't read the link until now. You can dig into or just have the dealer do it, it will be limp mode so you won't be able to go over 25mph or something.

She was picked up yesterday around noon and had her towed to Southwest Infiniti. Called this morning and without going into too much detail, said I had a bad coil pack. I came in this morning to pick up a loaner car and turns out my car is already done. So now I'm just waiting in they lobby for it. Will update with the official results later.
