FX vs...

I am looking for a new (probably used) SUV for my wife. She currently drives a Civic Si but I want something a bit more baby friendly but still fun to drive. We have another truck that we will be keeping but still need another car.

I am debating between a few cars that are all over the board...
FX
Yukon/Tahoe
RX
-We have a 4runner

How is the reliability and safety? I have done the BMW and Audi thing, but both were terrible in terms of reliability and we only stick to Toyota and Honda now.

Convince me of an FX. Will it be a good choice for us?

Welcome to the Scene!
Reliability is not much of an issue. I have 92k miles on my FX and besides the normal wear and tear maintenance issues nothing major. But you should go test drive all your choices and feel for yourself before making a decision.

Well, we aren't very picky about our cars. Basically we just want something reliable and safe. Will the FX be a good choice?

Within our family we have many cars and we have driven everything from American trucks to Japanese sports cars to Euro luxury sedans....

The choice depends on your needs. The FX is not an off road vehicle as it has more of a on the road sports car feel. Carrying capacity is in between the Yukon/Tahoe and the RX. Reliability is just as good if not better than those vehicles. If you need an AWD than you will need to get the AWD model. But out of your three choices, the FX is the best all around choice.

if you want something more sporty lookin, head for the fx or rx, but if you want something more robust and with more passenger capability go for the tahoe/yukon.... the reliability of the cars depends not only on the manufacturer, but the constant maintenance. if u maintain ur car it will thank u by giving u miles and miles of joy and fun.
:tinysmile_grin_t:

I have 110,000 miles on my FX and nothing has failed or broken - standard maintenance an replacement items only.

The FX has more of a sporty feel than the RX (mom drives an RX so familiar with that too). My wife drives a Tahoe, which has it's purposes for sure.

I like the FX for good family utility, but with an attitude. If you don't really care about looks or performance all that much, then go with your wallet!

It will never touch a dirt road, that's what we have the lifted/tires 4unner for. It will be strictly to get her to work and carry the kid. And being in Toronto, Canada we will definitely need the AWD. We basically garage the civic all winter.

Well, we have an RX in the family and that thing is reliable, but it is not a sporty ride at all. I really like the sporty looks of the FX and the style. It seems more luxurious than my other choices.

ride comfort comes in question if you constantly do long trips, which is where FX is might feel a little harsh. for daily driving to and from work, it serves me very well and I love my FX. like others have said, reliability has not been questioned in this model, you can get a fx45 for all the amenities it comes with or fx50 whichever you can afford. lexus is more refined but it looks very dull, and everyone drives a lexus....

Stig, it really does depend on what your needs are and of course, what is visually stimulating. I've owned my FX for 3yrs and it's been everything from a family cruiser, to a dragster. You cant go wrong at all.

Well, long trips we will probably do in my 4runner anyhow. I just want to make sure the car is reliable and safe. Seems like it is a consensus that it is a reliable car. I think I will probably pick up a FX35. It seems like a lot of people have problems with the Yukon/Tahoes which seems to be making me swing my decision.

The FX or RX would be my choice.. Lexus reliability is top notch.. ITs nice to know that the FX is very reliable.. CR Mag has it rated pretty high over other SUV/Crossovers.. GL..

The RX is a solid choice if you want to get in touch with your "soccer mom" side. The FX is good with kids, I have two little ones and everyone fits fine. You might want to throw a stroller and a few crate and barrel bags in the back to see if it has the capacity that you are looking for BUT for 1-2 day trips it rocks. Get the rear organizer for shopping, holds 4 grocery bags firmly in place while you are drifting.......

Well, I used to drive a BMW 330xi, and I was at the dealership every 2-3 months with some sort of minor issue. My 09 FX50, is definitely much better so far in terms of reliability. I have 32K km's so far, and no issues yet.

My mom drives a 2001 RX and, it's been quite amazing in terms of reliability. The only issue has been her battery and alternator, only because she doesn't drive it enough (she has 60K km's on an 01!!!!)

So far, my FX has been really fun during the winter as well (I live in Montreal, so rest assured I've driven it in heavy snow!). Apart from that, the sporty feel of the vehicle is amazing. If you do want a "fun to drive" SUV, I have to say: hands down for the FX.

My final recommendation, go JAPANESE, very reliable and high quality.

Currently a FX35 owner but 2 of my past cars were a Tahoe and a RX300.The FX is hands down the winner of the 3 choices. The Tahoe was more roomy and it could pull more weight than a FX and it had more room but my family fits just fine in my FX with room for extra cargo. The RX was nice and I liked it but was glad when someone ran a red light and totaled it.Welcome to the scene, buy the FX and any question you have can be anwsered here.Good luck with your search for the vehicle thats is best for your needs.:iS

Well in the last 2 years I was in a big accident in a Toyota Sequoia with a bus and survived. And then in the same Sequoia my parents were tboned and the car totalled again. Needless to say, I want something safe as well.

well i have a 2005 FX35 and a 2004 RX 330 and my suggestion is 100% go with the FX b/c it's sportier, better on the road, and allows you to play around w/ the car if you wish or just keep it stock while still looking amazing. Everything else the two cars are about even.
I do have to say that the lexus is a little more comfy in my book but then again lexus is known for an amazing ride =)
either one would be a great choice!

Thanks for all the info guys. All I have been noticing on the roads have been these FXs. I am really going to consider it now. It is basically at the top of my list in terms of cars (right after a cafe racer and dual spot....hahaha....).

Good luck with the FX! You will be very happy with your decision if you go with it. I know I am. My brother had an RX and it was very reliable and smooth, but lacked curb and sport appeal. The FX is definately a looker and has aged very well. What I love about it is that the design may be from 2003, but it looks better than almost of all the crossover/suvs on the roadtoday and even better looking than most 2010 models!
