question about your tachometer

hey everyone.
I have a 2006 FX35 awd with 39k miles on it.
I've had it for almost 5 months now and I've always been bothered by the jerky tachometer the way it seems to jump all over the place and doesn't really work smoothly. It's especially noticeable when i have the car in park and I rev the engine. The needle will actually go way into the red zone. I had a G35 coupe before this and the tach on that was very smooth so I'm wondering if all of you have the same issue or if I have a faulty dash that needs to be replaced under warranty.

Thanks in advance for the help.

I agree - shouldn't be doing that.

On start-up, mine will jump to about 2500 rpm, then drop down to 1100 at high idle. Low idle is around 650 rpm and the tach sits there without moving. When driving in manual mode, I have to really try to get into the redline area.

Thanks for the input guys. I have an appointment with the dealer on monday to see what the problem is I'll let you all know.

On a side note. this will be my first time with the dealer here in Rochester, NY and I don't know how cool they are about warranty stuff. Up till now I've dealt with Infiniti of Scottsdale in Arizona and must say that they were very easy to work with whenever I bought my G35 coupe in for service. They replaced my rear view mirror, seat rails, steering rack, front end links, AND transmission all under warranty and very little hassle to me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these guys are as easy to work with.

I have a 06 and it's never done anything like you described. There is something definitely wrong.

Maybe you have a hidden turbo or supercharger installed with titanium pulleys

My girlfriend's brother have drove my FX a couple of time and he told me that it's being doing this too.. I will confirm when I get home.

I have the same problem and my dealer told me that they would have to change the full cluster. there is nothing else that they can do to fix the problem. out of warranty not worth the money to fix.:frown:

good luck with yours you should be ok with the warranty

thanks for the video.. i will check my FX and see i it does the same when i get back home..
that tachometer is all over the place as you sad. but also i noticed that when you let go of the gas the needle doesnt lower in one fluent movement.. it you pay attention it kind of pause(hesitate) on the way down...

thanks for the video

glad to hear it's not normal. Didn't want to take it to the dealer and have them tell me it was OK. I'm glad I'll also be able to say that I showed it to a few people and they told me that it wasn't right.
I'll fill you in on what they say tomorrow.

UPDATE
Took car to dealer today and took the tech out in it to show him what the problem was. He told me that it wasn't that big a deal and i really shouldn't worry about it and it was going to be Infiniti's call on what I should do with it. I told him that I'd posted a video of it online and received lots of feedback telling me that it was indeed malfunctioning. So long story short they called me later to tell me that they were ordering a new cluster. They made it sound like they were doing me a big favor and even paused for a second after telling me what they were going to do as if they expected me to start loading on the thanks and appreciation. I merely said Ah, ok, thanks."

So, getting a new cluster. woot.

On a side note. I did have to go and pick up my car while they waited for the new cluster to arrive and return my loaner. Not happy about having to go back there in a few days to drop off my FX and go through the whole loaner thing again.

Have you guys ever been in a situation like that where they make you drive your car around while waiting on parts?
My dealership in Phoenix never made me do that, Once I had a loaner for almost a week. You don't really know what you have till it's gone I suppose.

Update, got the new cluster installed and I'm much happier with it. :-)
Somehow when I dropped the car off it had 40200 miles on it and when I picked it up it had 39700. Of course I'm not mentioning this at all to the dealer, I'm looking at it as a "consolation prize" since they disconnected my hardwired radar detector and now I have to reconnect everything.

Nice! haha. That sucks about the detector though....My detector runs all through my vehicle (k40 undetectable) and if one wire was messed up I would be furious...

but FYI, the odometer on the dash is not the only place that records the mileage for your vehicle: there is another on-board computer that also records information including that. I'm not sure which one, however.....But not everybody knows that:wink:
