My Infiniti Tech says he can't do 2 degree timing bump

I took my car in for a new grill, the old one was peeling. I've known the lead Tech for a few years now. I asked him to bump the timing 2 degrees and he said he could do it as a favor, no charge. A little bit later he came over and said it couldn't be done. He thinks maybe on 2006 it was changed and not possible. I don't think he is lying or incompetent, but has anybody else heard this? I think maybe Infiniti changed the software in the hand held scanner to remove this function possibly?
 
I have one but I don't really think it is worth the price because you are limited to what u can do with it. but the +2 advance is worth it for me because of the better response and better mileage. I am getting an avg of 16.0 with my 45 and that is a little freeway and alot of city.
 
I have heard the same thing about the 06-Present...It can be done but the ECU remaps it self to where it was before and you lose the benifit...I drive an 05 so cannot confirm just passing along hearsay
 
Consult II +2 advance should not be a problem, just had mine done two weeks ago. I had to look for a dealer that knew what they were doing. The tech shook his head and It took a bit longer than what I thought it would take but he got it done. Cipher is $400.00......
 
My local dealer said that it couldnt be done on the FX. The lead tech said that he had heard of it on G35, but said that the computer program could not change the FX. I told him that there were plenty of people out there (you guys) with the +2 and it can be done. He told me maybe with an aftermarket diagnostic tool, but not with Infiniti units.

I want this done!
 
91 is fine, but I'm still not convinced that +2 does anything. Timing retards back to baseline anyway when you're under load. Money better spent is in a reflash
 
I dont see any harm with it, but I still think it's just wasted effort. I'm in the minority though. A good tune does amazing things for the engine, . . even on a bone stock
 
Ya, it's not as good as a tune, but as long as it doesn't hurt I see nothing against it for those of us who may not have access to a reputable tuner, or don't want to shell out the money.
 
Ya, it's not a tune at all. I wouldnt spend anything on this mod. Like I said before, if the timing retards, your gain is nothing . . so what's the point of doing it altogether?

I wasn't looking to spend money on it either, but still I think it could be a good mod.
The factory timing setting is conservative and assumes 87 octane. If you use 93 octane, why would the timing retard?
 
The Nissan ECU is fairly sophisticated, & the Powertrain Control Module will retard back to factory spec so ya dont burn a hole right through the top of your piston. Maybe w/ 93 you might have a little more room, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna bump you back in most conditions. The right way to do this is to change parameters through a reflash program, & in turn, dial in your spark timing & fuel enrichment.
Either way, the ECU is gonna keep you safe from that detonation happening, so I guess if you're so inclined, feel free to change the clock . . just dont forget D/Savings time :tongue:
