275/40-20 on stock 20" rims?

I plan on getting winter tires for my 20" stockers. I know that the speedometer difference will be about 5-6% and I'm fine with it but would these tires fit the stock rim? The rim width range says 9-11" for this size which is far off the 8" of stockers.. What do you think?

I have 275/40/20's on my OZ's that I just bought and they are an 8.5 inch rim. They look better than the 275/45/20's I had on my previous 8.5's. They will work fine with the 8's with just a tiny bit more sidewall bulge than the 8.5's... I will post up a pic in a moment.

here are the 275/40/20's on a 20x8.5 (ultraleggera-soon to be painted)

Nice. Looks like the only major difference will be at speedo and I don't mind that since I'll use these as winter tires.. Will be kinda a sporty winter tire though  Thanks Jeff!

I was looking on tirerack.com and noticed that the specs for a 275/45/20 tire fit rims starting with an 8.5inch width....but a 275/40/20 fit rims that start with 9 inch wide rim and up. I don't understand this, wouldn't a 40 profile fit a thinner width better.

Here is a 275/45/20 on a 20x8.5

Jeff, the 40 vs the 45 means less side-wall flex to play with when installing the tires and thus the 40 profile will not be able to fit as narrow a width as a 45. There is very little difference between the two, but you'll definitely notice what I'm talking about when you go more drastic (like such as 275/30-20 vs 275/45-20). There's just simply not enough side-wall to cover any stretch, whether inward to cause a bulge, or outward to get that stretched tire look...

So would it fit the stock size properly? I mean I don't mind the bulge but I need this to be problem free. I already committed to buy the tires.. :frown: Hope it works..

this guy did it http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=2321893&postid=36317815

if the rim is too narrow then the tread won't have a flat footprint, I mean it will because of the weight of the vehicle on it, but at the expense of tire wear. for example if the rim is too narrow then the tire will wear more in the center at it's proper inflation... to have a even tire footprint on a rim that's too narrow it will need less air than recommended.

when the manufacturer recommends a rim range they are saying a range that will still provide even footprint pressure across the tread at the recommended air pressures... it's not that it won't work or won't fit, it's that it will not work as it's designed to work & Will cause uneven wear so with that setup you can expect to see the center of the tire wear more than the sides... how extreme is hard to say, every tire manufacturer uses different methods & specs to determine the suitable range that they consider "in spec"... real world I guess it's not a huge deal, but it is something that most don't realize...

That actually looks good. I'd imagine more bulge.. As for the wear, I don't mind running the tires at a lower psi or even if their center wears more. These will be a winter only setup. I don't think I'll even ride for 10000 miles on them. As long as it doesn't have the comfort or safety issues, it's fine.. I'm buying 4 lightly used Pirelli Ice&snows for $265 for God's sake!

Well I got the 275/40/20 snow tires I purchased a couple of weeks ago and got them mounted on the stock 20" rims yesterday. Overall, the tires look tiny, especially compared to my 22 inchers BUT I'll be running these until March so I don't mind the look that much. There's a considerable amount of bulge and my FX is much lower now, maybe even lower than an EX35.. Here's a crappy cell phone pic with dirty rims :zip:. If I decide that it's worth taking proper shots, I'll do that as well.. So far, I'm happy with the set. It's much responsive than 22s and the shorter gearing feels good. One final fact is that these tires need a much wider rim. 20x10 OZ ones would look awesome (or stockers with spacers) with these which gets me thinking again

i just got rims that r 10.5" wide and the guy scummed me by putting 265s on em, i have absolutely NO bulge for safety incase i scrape and im pissed off. i wanted 285s nut got no cash:frown:

Ah, well that explains it. But still I didn't think just a smaller tire size would make that much of a visual difference. Maybe its because I'm so used to looking at the aftermarket setup as the norm now.

What????? 10.5 running on 265's????? those things must be really really stretched out. Im running 285's on my 10's.

High offset + smaller tires + no spacers = tucked in look with big space in the wells unfortunately.. Compared to my 22s, which are almost at stock offset as well, these doesn't look that good really.. The good thing is that these are snows only..
