Steering wheel shaking

Im having a problem with my car when im driving on the highway and reach about 55mph. The steering wheel shakes a bit. Ive had the tires balanced twice already and still is there. Anyone ever had this problem?

I've heard this with cheaply made tires too. Can you provide more info - OEM Tires, oem wheels, etc...?

Hub ring center your aftermarket wheels on your axle. The other thing you could run into, hate to say it would be your brake rotors needing re-surfacing, worst case hub bearing. But I would think the first would be hub rings, how long have you had your wheels?

+1. Are these wheels hub centric? If not I would look into this first before another alignment or more invasive measure.

Are the rims new or used? Also did you let the same person rebalance them or did you try other places?

If you have an up and down shake or thumping usually that indicates a low profile tire and flat spots which will usually go away after a certain amount of miles driving.

Shaking of the steering wheel at 50mph+ usually means balancing.

If your rotors are warped you should feel shaking while braking.

Have you checked if your rims are true?

Definitely get hubcentric rings and make sure you are using the proper lugs nuts as the first step.

that used to happen to me when I first got my rims installed...I went and had them balanced, aligned and rotated again....it helped but still had a slight shake, after about a hundred miles it stopped, now smooth as eggs

maybe you need a balancing and an alignment. when i had my winters on i had a bit of a shake on my steering wheel after about a month or two, when i took my winters off my all-seasons were balanced and there is no shake.

I've been working on my fx's shimmy for over a year. Take a look at the steps and drive your fx for a little while (1-2 days) to see if the shimmy is still there:

1) ROADFORCe balancing. Regular balancing doesn't work
2) If you have aftermarket wheels, check the hub centering rings. If they're worn, it may put your wheels out of round
3) Check alingment.
4) Check rotors. Try braking at highways speeds, ie, braking from 70 to 40. If you feel more vibration than the regular, your rotors could be warped. Either get them machined or replaced.
5) If none of the above works, don't do them again, it's wasting money. Go to #6
6) If your fx is under warranty, get the dealership to check the front hub bearings. Usually, the front left bearing gets worn out. You can understand this by taking a wide turn (say 180 degrees) at slow speeds (30-40). It usually makes a humming sound. If it does it while taking a right turn, left bearing is worn, vice versa..
7) If that doesn't work as well, get your dealership check the steering rack. There's a bolt on the steering rack that adjusts the tightness. Get them tighten that up a little bit (over tightening prevents steering wheel to return to original position when parking etc). This did the trick for me.
8) At this point, if you've gone through all the steps above, get your wheels roadforce balanced again.
9) If that doesn't help as well & if your fx is under warranty, try to get them replace the steering rack, test it & if no result, adjust bolt again.

Just for your info, I've been through ALL of these  Generally, the roadforce does it. If not, you can get them check the hub bearings and if the bearings are good, get them adjust the steering tightness bolt. My shimmy is 98% gone with tightness adjustment and roadforce after it and I relate the remaining to the warped rotors..

Good luck

Thanks everyone for the responses to my post. My wheels are brand new Diablo deltafoce. Tires- Kuhmo Ecsta also brand new. I will go through the steps and if all else fails i will just take it to the dealership since I am still under warranty. Im hoping it will go away soon like some of you said happened with your new wheels.
Thanks

I got my wheels/tires at Discount tire. I wonder if the second time I brought my car in they did the roadforce balance. If not I hope they do, its right down the block.

Thats a good list to go thru EgeFX! Nice.

learned it the hard way.. I've been having this vibration since Oct 2006. It took a new steering rack, a new set of OEM 20s & bridgestone tires, the whole front axle, 2 set of oem rotors and tons of money spent into balancing... Finally, I don't have any shimmy left but a rough feeling on the steering feel which I think is because of warped rotors.. Getting it replaced today..

It's an advanced balancing system done by this thingy ( http://www.gsp9700.com/ ) Most major tire shops have it. Smaller ones may not have it. With the regular balance, they might not get rid of the smaller vibrations, with this one, it's more accurate balancing.
