I've always been a huge fan of the Toyota 4A-GE motor.
They came in the Corollas & old style Mr2's.
Really strong and had all kinds of aftermarket parts for them.

Another one is the 2nd generation Supra - 7MGE was a strong motor also, but the problem was the Supra was a heavy ass car

well, I can add that ford v8's are very durable, it's very common to see them top 400K miles regularly on nyc taxi cabs, & I've seen some hit 500 & 600 & more on the original engine... chevys never make it that far....

I used to think the 86-87 buick grand national was a great engine, way ahead of it's time, not so much the engine itself but the whole package, I used to put GN engines in everything:tongue: ok, so there a little dated now...

the gm northstar was/is a great bit of engineering....

I wouldn't say any of the above deserves a title of "best" though, maybe notable....

gm's newest LS series engines are pretty great... I wouldn't mind having one of those:biggrin:

the best? hmmm, don't know if there really can be any answer to that, there are too many things that can be considered criteria, durability, efficiency, quite &smooth, making big power... the best engine in a commuter car has nothing to do with the best engine at the track, too many different things that one can be the best at, best all around would be a balance of all criteria, but then others will be better at certain aspects than even the best all around.

taking that into account, there is no such thing as the best:tongue:

Ever since i was a teenager i wanted an Audi. I was always into power and performance and was blown away when i got my first S4 V6 turbo .. Then I discovered the A8 4.2L V8 and I was in heaven.. since then I could not drive anything else than V8...

Brand of car: Audi A8 quatro
Engine Model : 4.2L V8
Year of car: 2002

The response and agility of this beauty is amazing..

GN's were a beast at the track...........one of my fav Cars.
I used to have a GMC Syclone - which was pretty much the same thing except in a pick up truck body.

(thats how I got my Screen name)

damn the a4's are amazing cars, but i heard maintence wise there a pain, could you correct me on this? always loved the gn, those 3.8t can put some power out, and the gmc cyclone i havent seen too many around, iv'e seen the gmc 454ss which is amazing pick-up

the gn was based on a 3.8 buick engine the cyclone typhoons were chevy 229's, the onlt thing they were similar about was they were both turbo's, but nothing is swappable or the same at all between them...

I had a v8 quattro before they were called a8's, it was just called a v8 quattro..

it was a very cool car, was totally sick in downpours or snow, was more like a jet ski than a car, but repairing & maintaining cars like that has got me to swear off audi's for good...

yes, maintenance on any Audi is a bitch..

just to change the timing belt was about 1,300 bucks.

but, it was worth having all of those Audi's..

Those were the days...

but, i am happy to drive what i have.

funny, my screen name is from a GN v6 turbo in a caddy coupe, still have that car, was a wild ride, I still love the GN engines, put my heavy boat of a caddy in the 12's, comfortably, reliably, & got over 20mpg to boot when cruising, and quietly too, was the perfect motor for a caddy, still to this day one of my favorite motors of all times:biggrin:
