2011 FX50s Weird Transmission Issue

Ok so I have another post "2011 FX50S Coolant Leaked Out" thats related to this post.

Strange issue is after my radiator was replaced and coolant replaced I noticed my transmission acting weird. Yes even more weird than normal. Its like it would hunt for gears sometimes when I shift into drive. It would sometimes jerk fwd a few times with my foot on the brake. Other times when i hit the gas it would either rev but not engage and other times just not respond and then all of a sudden kick in. It was really frustrating. This all started happening after the coolant and radiator change.

After i took it back to my mechanic and explained what was going on they fixed the coolant leak temporarily until the new hoses come in. He said he '"checked" the transmission fluid and it "looked good". I asked him if he could do a transmission fluid change and he shyed away from that saying maybe i should take it to the dealer because it has CVT. Ok so anyways I left there and VOILA!! magically the transmission issue seems to have disappeared. We'll see as I drive it more. Im wondering if they did something or if fixing the small coolant leak could have fixed the transmission issue. I dnt think so. I think they found something they might have mnissed or messed up and remedied it without telling me.

My question is: - Does anyone know what couldve been the issue that could have been causing my transmission issue because to hear them tell it they did nothing but check it. Could a small amount of transmission fluid difference from the radiator change have caused this issue?

Thanks

Yeah something doesn't make sense here with your mechanic. Perhaps a lot more fluid was lost than just what in the radiator. I'm curious how he checked the transmission fluid. Also what kind of fluid that he put in.
You said after you came back, he "fixed the coolant leak temporarily until the new hoses come in". Where was the leak?

Thanks for the response Hoang Le. Yeah I know right because I asked him and he just kept saying the fluid looks fine. He claims they plugged the lines so no ATF fluid leaked. Im not sure what was done to be honest. i can usually go back and look on my vehicle but this time it seemed a lil bit more secretive and they closed the door to the bay. i know ur not supposed to be back there, insureance liability and all that but they always allow me back but not so much that day. Anyways I got a case of NissanMatic S fluid from the dealer so I plan to get it changed. Does it hold 12qts or 10? I bought a xcase which is 12 i believe. I guess Ill bite the bullet and take it to the dealer depending on cost. I heard folks on here say I can do it myself but i dont want to chance it. this latest experience has got me shaky.

As far as the leak, its coming from where the upper hose connects to the radiator neck. Its a drip leak. You know like when you try to reuse an old hose but its stretched out so maybe it was not making as good a seal. Funny thing is I told them to replace everything the first time, the hoses along with the thermostat and water pump to take care of that all together so i wont have to deal with it down the line. And here it is I had to deal with it again. They only replaced the radiator and the thermostat. Im not sure but they looked like they could have been backed up that day and probably wanted to get me back up and running but i would have rather waited and have it done right.

Sounds like you might need to find a new machanic.... guys that makes mistakes and not willing to truly tell you he forgot to do something is worst than letting Pep Boys working on your car....

I believe the tranny holds about 14 quarts. So you need at least that amount for a full flush. If you do drain and fill, the amount of old fluid (in quart) remains after flushes, assuming that 4 quarts are drained each time:
Original 14.00
1 -> 10.00
2 -> 7.14
3 -> 5.10
4 -> 3.64
5 -> 2.60
6 -> 1.86
7 -> 1.33
8 -> 0.95
9 -> 0.68
10 -> 0.48

Ok Thx. I have a case of NissanMatic S12 Qts. Im going to have the stealer do it when i get back next week. Theyre going to charge me about $180 for drain and fill with me supplying the ATF Fluid.

Oh yeah BTW the transmission issue is still there. Haoppens lest than before but still there Hesitation as well revving high and then all of a sudden kicking in.

did you get the trans flashed by the dealer?

No. Do they charge to flash the transmission? What is that exactly (changing the software or pulling possible problem codes)??

Im here now getting the ATF drain\fill we'll see if that remedies my issue. If not I may have to take it back up there and try the flash as youre suggesting based on what it is.

No charge, it's a TSB issue.

AFT drain/fill may show a difference

Thanks a lot man. The drain\fill seems to have fixed the issue. Ive been driving it for about 5 days now and have not noticed the issue. I wonder what really happend when the radiator was changed to cause that or if it was just coincidental. Anyway just happy it seems to have been resolved so far.

Heres the deal though, when i purchased the Nissan ATF fluid from another Infiniti dealer I asked them how much i would need to change out the ATF fluid. They told me 10 or 12 Qts but said they had to verify with a tech whoch they never did. they ended up selling me the case which contains 10 or 12 Qts i cant remember. I took to my dealership and they did the drain\fill but only used about half the case so now I have 5 Qts of NissanMaticS Fluid (New) left. smh Any note on why only half the ATF flud was used?? Shouldnt it take more?

Either they didnt do the full drain\fill or someone sold me more than i needed. I guess I can sell them. I have 5 Qts for sale if anyone needs.

I also have a nother post related to an issue related to the dealer trying to gouge me again; Please see my other post "Center Console ArmRest Debacle)

I suspect they simply drained the pan and didn’t actually flush the system. There are only about 4-5 quarts in the pan. This just involves removing the drain plug, measuring how much is drained, then adding an equal amount of new fluid. I just did mine and drained just shy of 5 quarts. I will do it again after about 500 miles.

Ok thx Dennis mcGuire. Thx for the explanation. I have 5 Qts for sale if anyone needs.

Thanks for the information. I already got the transmission reprogrammed. It is running flawlessly. Which I had waited for your response before I got it done. Thank you!!!
