Thought on 7spd Tranny

Hey All,

I've had my 09 FX35 for about two weeks now. I'm still getting used to the 7spd tranny. Sometimes in slow traffic it feels like it's hunting for the right gear. Passing on the highway is a bit slow.

I find myself putting it in DS mode and using the paddle shifter during highway driving to make shifting a lot easier.

I wanted to know what others think about the 7spd.

Thanks,

John

I am currently an owner of both the 1st Gen and the 2nd Gen of the FX35. To compare the two, i think the 1st gen 5 speed tranny is a lot more responsive than the 7 speed tranny in the 2nd gen. Driving in local traffic, not much difference, but on the highway, if you want to pass someone, the 7th speed is a bit slow, or at least it feels that way. However, on my 2nd gen FX35, i only had it for like 3-4 days, so it might take some time for it to break in.

I think it's ok. A little bit slow but you get used to it. Honestly i do have the paddle shifters but being a "one hand on the wheel driver" i barely use them. I think the differnce is when changing gears with the paddle shifters they give you that manual transmission feeling, and the automatic mode makes the changes smoother. At least this is my opinion...

Well, I just dropped off the FX to the dealer so they can check out the transmission. It was actually slipping the other day.

They tranny just felt odd. I'll see if they find anything by Friday.

I had my 09 FX35 for about 3 weeks and I think I had the same problem you had. It never feels that the tranny is in the correct gear when coasting at slow speed. And when trying to pass there is a slack before the tranny is engaged to the proper gear.

I took it to the dealer and didn't think anything was wrong after keeping my car for 2 days. I am going to drive it for a while and see if it improves.

And yes they did the steering column recall while the car was in the shop. I was not notified of the recall before that point though.

Yeah dealer said the same thing about my FX. I'll keep you posted on my tranny, if anyway odd happens.

I call up my dealer today regarding the recall on Steering Column and they said there is not recall but the do give extended warranty on the steering column and Telescopic Motor to 72 months with 110,000 km limitation. I got the sticker for the extended warranty from mail a couple weeks ago and i forgot about that i kept it in my wallet. lol

I read all your views concerning the transmission on the FX35 09 models, I have never noticed anything wrong with mine at all, it operates smoothly as it should and kicks down quickly when I floor it. Even in DS mode I noticed a difference in the car and it seems more responsive, strange but true. Of course the gasoline consumption is more in DS mode but I never bought the car and then worrying about how much gas it uses, thats of no concern to me! I use my car on a daily basis and I do drive it but perhaps its kind to say that I don't drive it hard but I DO drive it fast. I also think infiniti should have offered this FX 35 - FX 50 with grooved or holed brake discs all round as its supposed to be a sports vehicle and this feature is somewhat lacking, even painted calipers like those on the G37s coupe would have been nice rather than go and purchase aftermarket ones and in that process losing your warranty on your vehicle. Just little things like this, kinda niggly if you like or is it just me? I suggest if any car manufacturer really wants to make the ultimate SUV as infiniti have tried to do in the FX 35 and FX 50, then leave no stone unturned, go all the way.

In Taiwan I think they never inform the customer of Infiniti callbacks to the main dealer. My steering column automatic backward and forward movement when stopping and getting out the car failed about a week after getting it, infiniti service department here have never brought that to my attention and I have never informed them either. I hear you all speak about Flashing the transmission, again here they would look at you with an open mouth as its probaly NEVER EVER been done on anyones car and they would indeed ask you WHY you want that done. Only thing I dislike about my second generation FX 35 is the whistling noise I get from the drivers door area, maybe exterior door mirror or a badly fitting door, rubber etc etc at high speeds. Once I get over 200Kph I have a terrible whistling noise, it would be rather odd to go to infiniti and tell them of that HUH as here speed limit is 110 - 120.

I am also displeased with the Bose sound system, considering all those speakers in my car and a sub in the spare wheel it sounds horrible in my honest opinion. Bose are supposed to be of good quality, perhaps Bose should just concentrate on Hifi systems, speakers for home use rather than try to play with ICE, clearly they are not as good as others but as most people know Bose, perhaps people raise an eyebrow when they learn the salesmen plugging that the infiniti has a Bose sound system fitted!!

I am currently working with a friend of mine who owns a ICE shop here in Taiwan to upgrade my infiniti system into something rather special and to make it what Infiniti/Bose should have made it, VERY SPECIAL. I have a second car which my wife uses and I have spent a small fortune on ICE and the sound from her car has no comparison over the FX35, mind you the system in the Mitsubishi cost me over $250,000nt, door speakers alone in that car were $30,000nt and that 12" sub, ordered from Italy was over $27,000nt. I have 2 AMPS in her car with a huge 3 Farrad Capicitor, the car was even sound-proofed from the bare metal floor and trunk area with dynamat and a layer of felt on top before the carpets went back in.....The doors got the same treatment, they shut like with the heavy sound like the Infiniti and hard to hear road noise.

Apart from that, next year I am going for the FX 50 or the NEW COUPE G37s, just love the coupe, but most likely the FX50 or FX 45 as its known in Taiwan will be what I will go for. Incidently, I saw an Oyster white FX37s here 2 days ago, although not new it looked cool and unmarked.....got to give its owner respect for keeping it so clean.

correction here, I have worked in retail before. I can tell you we get PAY to plug Bose products. We get the most commission when we sell one. We were even told to tell the customers that bose are the "mercedes of the hifi world"

in fact most of the consumer products are made with the poorest quality material and have the poorerst sound quality. But of course the consumers couldn't really tell because the whole store is outfitted with bose equipements and the few other demo product from other company are not the same price range as the bose ones on display (either ALOT cheaper or ALOT more expensive)

Don't buy into the hype. Bose home audio is just sony laptops. expensive piece of shit that will not live up to its name once u open your eyes are look at the competition.

with that being said I do enjoy the bose system on my 35. could be the what you listen too? I'm a bass head and pretty much only listen to bass heavy hiphop songs and imo its pretty good. Could use a bit more kick in the bass section but being a basshead there is never enough bass.

hear hear!!

I installed component "Focal" speakers in my wifes car and these sound unreal compared to the Bose in the FX 35. I have enough bass in her car for the 2 robots on mars to hear, :)
