i just got my first speeding ticket... 81 in a 65 coming back from mammoth (worst part is... i really was doing 75 most of the way and just kinda didnt notice until the two cops parked facing the highway reminded me... damn you luxury comfy quiet fx35... my tacoma couldnt do 70 without making me think it was gonna fall apart... ok... done ranting)
anyways...anyone know any good radar detector thingamajiggers. are they worth it (dont tell me not to speed) what do i look for etc etc

The Valentine 1 and the Escort X50 are pretty similar. The X50 doesnt have the arrows to show you where its coming from. Trainerken has a Beltronics unit which is supposed to be made by Escort.

Mikes Mount is a must for the radar - and the invisicord.
You can find V1's used on other forums for a good price.

from many research that I did before buying the Beltronics RX65, Valentine 1 is great, but it'll also run you $400... A lot of the test results showed that while V1 came in first, there were many that weren't far behind... including the Passport X50 (Will's R.D.) and the RX65 (mine) which is basically the exact same unit for Beltronics and Passport ARE same company. Passport's highest model 9500i won't really do any better job than the X50 in terms of detecting radars, but it has a GPS that will "remember" all the false alarm spots... which is kinda a waste of money. Beltronics' highest model STi won't do any better than my RX65, but it's NOT detectable by Radar Detector-Detectors... "Huh"? You say... In Virginia, Washington DC, and some Canadian provinces, radar detectors are illegal... so cops have RDD's to pick out those with radar detectors... And also truck drivers can't have them either (in all states I believe). So, in California... since it's legal to have radar detectors AND you're NOT a truck driver... buying the STi is pointless too.

In California, the "band" that you need to be concern about is Ka band... as it's fast becoming the radar of choice by police.

I would stay away from the cheap brands like Cobra and most Whistler models. What's your budget?... I would expect to spend $200+ for a decent unit. Passport has a decent one that's cordless which is really cool...

Go take your traffic school... I never really mind it... cuz there's always cute girls in traffic school ;)

moneys not an issue... if i dont spend it on this... ill just spend it on something else.
and ive been told that if youre over 80, you cant do traffic school and my ticket says 81 (hello insurance increase). it also says my car is an 07 (ill take the increase if they can make this one true)
    thanks for the quick replies

I'm pretty sure you can... 16 over the limit isn't that bad.... but I may be wrong. The cop was a prick for writing 81. What county was it? If suppose you can't go because that's the rule... then you could always go in front of the judge and plead for traffic school... but if it's like Bishop... then I don't know if you wanna drive that far to go to court just to ask for that.

in ny, I think if there is an error on the ticket you can get it thrown out, if the officer mistaked your 04 for an 07, who's to say he didn't mistake 61 for 81... I'd talk to a lawyer & enquire about that... errors like that can get a ticket dismissed here at least...

Not true cause I did traffic school last year for a ticket I got in Feb for speeding 81mph on the 210 FWY. It was late at night and my dam blue (at that time) license plate lights made me stick out like a sore thumb. I paid $240.00 and did traffic school on the net.

In regards to a radar detector I recommend the escort or V1.

I would also fight that ticket due to that error.

+1 on everything Ken says. I got the RX65 from ebay about $250 and the warranty IS valid even if you get it somewhere else than retail and don't have a receipt (unlike Escorts I believe). It has a great distance but be aware that you won't really get protected against Laser and cops that would catch you without a radar. The point on laser is that it's so quick that if you get a laser warning it means you're caught. There are laser jammers for that but they're expensive and hard to wire.

i will probably be getting the Beltronics STi because it is undetectable and radar detectors are illegal here. i just need to find a stealthy mounting spot.

looking at my ticket again today, the officer also got my age wrong. made me 31 instead of 30... thats -2 for the coppers and hopefully not -200($) for me

lol, that was funny just to read.

I have had my V1 for a while now and really love the arrow deal. Doing the longer road trips like we have it has come in handy many a times. Heading back from AZ we were hauling through the badlands. CHP was staked out ahead around a bend, Ka going off and arrows ahead. 4 cars all slowed down just in time to pass by him doing 75ish vs 95.

The arrows have saved us a few times and helped to find them before they find us. always have to be aware though, it's radar detector not cop detector.

and don't forget radar detectors do nothing against speed check by aircraft

yep another gotcha. All the guys in the caravan with me know when I slow down for some odd reason they need to do the same.
