QX56 grille on fx?

hey guys, I've been thinking of what to do for my grille for a while now, blacked out, shaved, pro-drive & whatever just didn't grab me as yeah, that's def what I want... I wanted something that's custom but doesn't scream aftermarket & something pretty different. I thought about grafting a G grille in but there kind of small for this & maybe not the look I would be going for... I really like the look of the shell that rookie did & seriously considered something like that but don't want that much of an aftermarket look really.... I have some chrome trim & kinda like a little chrome in the grille...

sooo, this is what I came up with, grafting the center of an 08 QX56 grille into the shell of the fx grille. the QX grille is nice, don't look so nice on the QX though because it is so huge & flat. the part that I removed looks great in the fx shell I think. the emblem is quite a bit larger than the fx emblem. I was able to do my cuts clean enough that I can keep the QX insert all chrome, the outside fx frame will be black & the emblem can be either black or chrome, leaning towards black atm but well see... I like the 2 tone black & chrome look & it should match my headlights & wheels pretty good too I think.

heres a few shots, it's almost done, just need to finish sand the edges slightly to be able to drop the center down about another 5mm or so in the shell then paint the shell... the insert is a perfect fit now & the shell will be painted & then the insert will then go in & stay chrome....

this is a kind of easy mod but doing all these cuts & keeping a pefect edge on the chrome while getting a perfect fit isn't so easy, but do-able... only slight problem is the QX grille is still kinda new & little chance to find a used one yet, I had to buy a new one from infiniti, overall I'm happy with the look... what do you think? this one may be a little controversial & I think I expect some guys not to like it, personally I think I love it:biggrin:
 
Looks better than I imagined when you first described it. Can't wait to see it installed...IF it's ever installed! :laugh:
 
Lets see it on the car John .. Can't wait to see this in person .. is this why you bought another grill from ebay? :laugh:
 
yeah, you caught that one huh, was you bidding on it too?:tongue: I'm collecting grilles & got a few already, this QX one is built from your original grille, I want to build a few different styles really, but this one is my favorite so far, just hope the large emblem in this grille doesn't give it that flavor flav look:biggrin:

:bigsmile: .. No I didnt bid on that one, I saw Sweet post it and I just clicked on it to see if it was really for an 06-08 (which are hard to find) and I saw your name as the winning bidder ... LOL ... I was thinking about getting another grill to black out to have 2 different looks, just like you.
 
ok, test fitting on the fx... I think it's exactly the look I was going for... bling bling:tongue:

the emblem is big, I don't think it's TOO big though? I think I like it. the whole insert still needs to be moved down slightly as you can see in these shots..

I'm going to try to PS the upper & lower fx bars & surround in black to see how that will look, I also wonder how it would look with the whole thing black... dave, whats the best way for me to make the chrome look black in ps?

Look pretty good John. But I think for this grill its would be best to keep it chrome like it is or perhaps black chrome. If you were going to paint it all black then I think this mod is kind of useless, then why not just keep it the way it was. My .02 cents =)

Doing it blk, almost makes it look like your original grill. I like the chrome style you started with. That is what's unique about how you redisgned the Q-grill into the FX.
I vote stay with the chrome, even though personally I like blk grills.
 
I don't know what use levels means but that looks so real, give me another hint:embarrassed: I def wanna play, wanna try just the emblem & the little buttons chrome too, doc, I think even all blacked out it looks different enough from the stock to be worth the effort for sure, sometimes subtle differences are classy & enough too. I want it to look like it belongs there & wasn't just stuck there... it looks good all black even...
