I was just wondering, is powdering coating an expensive process?

    Really depends on the size.

There's industrial-style powdercoating, such as what an amusement park would contract out to have 3,890 feet of railing powdercoated for the railings in the lines you wait in, while others would just paint the railings... there's places that powdercoat whole car frames, and then there's places that will do wheels only up to 16 or 18" max... and yet others that will charge a premium to do 20, 22 and sometimes 24" rims.

Lastly, there's SO much variance in pricing that your best bet is to call around.

I can't get my plenum polished around here for less than $400-500.

If I were in Chicago looking around, I could probably find a place for $100-200. Good luck, and be sure to use a place that has personal recommendations as to how well it holds up.

FYI, many 2-part paints hold up just as good if not better than powdercoating. In the Navy we use a 2-part paint on the decks, it's epoxy style and we call it red deck (because it's red and goes on the deck, making the deck red, go figure) and that stuff is semi-indestructible. Get it on clothes and it will never, ever come off. Get it on your fingers and you may have them stuck together for a lil while. 2 part paints are no joke (the only caliper paint you should use is 2-part style).

for wheels you are looking at around:

also depending on how much masking they do will raise the price, don't forget all the little rivets.

Painting rims is fine also, with the modern paints....the paint holds well.

questions: is it possible to paint rims to have a gun metal effect? how much darker is it from the stock 20's..in terms of color difference. has anybody tried doing gun metal instead of the black stocks?

Gonna re-do the color gloss black, but in person they actually did look gun-metal, not black at all. I liked the color, but I want to try out black this time (and fatty, meatier tires)

And yea Ege, the tires themselves were also about 14 lbs lighter... each...

well, they're almost non-existent.. :) I'm also thinking to go with smaller tires but I'm around -5% range max.. Maybe will do 275/40/20 or 285/40/20 or 295/40/20.. One thing I don't like with Infiniti is that they use too thick sidewalls.. Look at Range Rovers with 275/40s.. Our 20 inchers look so thick compared to those..

Sorry for the threadjack, btw. To get back on the topic: My installer is working with a powdercoating guy. He'll do it any color for $100 a wheel (if wheels are chrome) and $120 if painted.. The paint peels off during the owening process so he says he needs to blast them due to that..
