Confused about Headers

I've been reading the "Header" thread (which now has turned into CAT thread :2smile:) and I am more confused now than I was before.

Questions:

1. Has anyone tried the "ebay" $50-$100 headers for 350z/g35/fx35? There seems to be a lot of the and they look just like the other higher end ones. What is the downside?

2. I've been looking into a few brands and the only ones mentiond on the original thread that I can aford is a used DC. I also read that someone had the Megan Headers and they like it. Between DC and Megan, which one should I go with?

3. I've again read a lot about the Test pipes and the noise, as well as the Emmision issue with SMOG Check. If I go for the header mod and keep the OEM CAT am I defeating the purpose? Most true hi-flow cats I've seen are $500+. Are there any cheaper alternatives, other than non-resonated test pipes?

I like my TopSpeed headers...

Also, they shouldn't affect the smog check... if they do it'd be negligible as the cats are still doing their job. Stick with stock cats, you'll probably end up with them back on anyways.

here in california, we have much stricter smog laws than other states... if it isnt CARB exempt(legal?)(like the sticker the intakes come with) ... you wont pass the visual and wont be allowed to take the actual smog test... nothing some extra money cant solve... in the right neighborhood... so ive been told

...how can you fail a visual on headers? Do they pull the under engine cover thing off and reach inside with mirrors?

I have my Cover on - and you can see my headers......easy to spot if they know what they are looking for. Thats why I had asked originally if I can weld the OEM heat sheild onto the headers to hide them.

BTW OP - I have Strup headers and have had no issues. I would stay away from the ebay headers.....

Thanks guys, fot the responses so far. So If I were to get a set of DC 350Z/G35 headers and keep my original Cats, will it be OK with minimal loss of power? Also, Have the Jim Wolf pop charge with the Sticker, is that C.A.R.B. Cetified? Also, do they fail you for the fact you have headers installed, or if you don't have CATS? I thought it's the CAT delete that make it illegal?

Basically any mod in California that is not CARB certified will fail. Messing with your cats is a big fine if caught, if you don't want cats and want to keep the stock look try gutting them (but you won't pass the sniffer). Also yes the JWT pop charger is Carb Certified.

I still need to know if any one of you has or knows about DC or Megan headers.

fothion, I see that you have some concerns on pricing.. Just keep in mind that you probably can't do headers DIY and it'll at least cost you 5 hrs labor to get them in. Say at $80/hr, it'll cost you $400 just to install these.. Just fyi..

The headers are tedious, we don't have much more room down there than the G35 bays. You could do it yourself if you had enough extensions and various socket styles to get in there.

my headers were listed as g35... stillen had fx headers listed at a few hundred MORE than the g35 headers, so i ordered g35 headers... they fit justy as well & exactly the same...

Same thing happened with f1fx. I think he got his headers at a Stillen day a while back listed as G35 headers, I think Stillen even installed his.

Just bought the DC's. Will be picking it up by the Weekend. I'm some what connected as far as mechanical help so I don't have to worry about eh $80/hour. I think I maybe able to get away with $200 or so. I was just snooping around other forums and came accross a few things as wall.

Kinetix makes a Carb legal Cat Pipe that is about $400. However, you can get it as a kit with the Plennum for $670.

It maybe less elsewhere, I don't know since I could not find the Part Number to search. Obviously I only need the Cat. If I can find someone to go in with me and buy the plennum and give me a few $$$ for my 1/2" Motordyne spacer, I'll be good to go.
