Chedman13's Research for QX56... it has begun

So for those that don't know, I sold my car to the one and only Handy_Andy.

I'm down to one car, a 2011 Volkswagen Routan -- which is amazing by the way. I really don't need two cars in the family (I bike and take a train), but having a second car would be nice.

Looking at QX56 prices, they've depreciated very nicely for me to scoop one up and looking out for a clean one. But to someone like me, what's more important, is researching my mods beforehand...

I prefer the 1st generation style (as I do the FX's), and looking to advice from anyone who has one or knows something about these QX56's. Someone told me to get a 2008+ because they had larger rotors/calipers. That's the kind of advice I'm looking for (even though that exact point won't matter because I'll be throwing on an aftermarket BBK!).

I'm also contemplating a Stillen Supercharger and paying a premium for full warranty and installation at a Stillen approved facility (which happens to be my Infiniti Dealership). I don't care about gas mileage, I'm more concerned on potentially annoyance of sound and if it will wear off like a novelty. Turbo's I never get bored of, but supercharger whine -- yeah.

Dropping the QX is top priority too, but I've read of the aftermarket company that makes them, they are prone to snapping (sound familiar?).

Anyways, if you have a QX56 or know about them -- let's hear the comments.

I agree get a first gen. I don't know much, but I do know I love the styling. What color you looking for?

Prefer white, but will take a silver.

Size matters in terms of physics on earth, and need a safe way to haul my 2 kids, wife and parents/in-laws all in one car! This fits the bill.

Yeah the 2nd gen is a better choice. Quieter ride, better interior materials,, better exterior, etc. It also rides a million times quieter. Also made in Japan.

Honestly from what ive heard the 1st gen reliability is terrible. Not just because its made in the usa but it was designed poorly. The rear air suspension is notorious for leaking and sagging. Its a very expensive repair. Also the TCM is known for rusting because of its location making it vunerable to water. Lots of other issues too. But just some of the many that could lead to expensive repairs.

I'm doing the same research for my parents right now. They're looking to step up from their FX and looking for someone a little larger to tow their boat. I'll be subscribing to this topic.

Rent one from Hertz and see if you like the current model. Woud love to have one in my garage.

Try them both (1st and 2nd gen) and get a read. The brakes you will reaolve as tou said so that shoudn't be an issue. You know I love you like a brother from another mother but I'd tske the 2nd gen in a heartbeat. I do approve of your color choices :)

Ed, my brother has the 06 QX56 in white and has not had any major issues. The brakes on the pre 06 has issues with failure hence the major recall and lawsuit over it. But the 06+ have been fine regarding the brakes. I almost bought the 06 too as my dealer was giving me a great deal at that time with 0.9% financing, but wife opted for the lexus gx460 as it was smaller and easier for her to drive. Anyways, good luck with the search.

Wow Ed, I also wanted a QX56 in my garage, but wife is too attached rot the Sienna still. I hope when my son is a couple more years later, I will be in the market for one. I would love the third gen more over then the second. To me the second gen's look is not refine and curvy like the FX lime ups. The second gen looks too much like it's distance sibling that's with the Nissan tag.

You're on to a good move, Ed. I hope to do the same thing in about a year. None of the previous gen I've seen have keyless start and that would definitely be the top feature on my wish list.
I would guess that some Titan engine mods would transfer over easily enough.

i would get this if ur going to supercharge the qx. Ive been in one and the torque is insane
